Minor Earthquake Rattles New Jersey and New York Area

On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, early in the morning, parts of New Jersey and New York were shaken by a small earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake measured 2.7 in magnitude and struck shortly after 6:00 a.m.

Light shaking was felt in several nearby communities, including parts of New York City, despite the epicenter being in northern New Jersey. Although the shaking only lasted a few seconds, many residents reported experiencing a brief rumble and hearing dishes or windows rattle.

So far, there have been no reports of harm or injuries.

Officials in charge of emergency services in the area confirmed that the quake was minor and did not pose a significant threat to the general public. A spokesperson for the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management stated, “We’re monitoring the situation, but there is no cause for alarm.”

Small earthquakes are not unusual in this region, though they are rarely felt. Seismologists say quakes below magnitude 3.0 are typically harmless and often go unnoticed unless people are very close to the epicenter.

Still, experts say the event is a reminder that earthquakes, even small ones, can happen almost anywhere. Reviewing emergency plans and knowing what to do in the event of an earthquake—drop, cover, and hold on—are encouraged among residents.

Even though no additional earthquakes are anticipated, the USGS will continue to keep an eye on the region.
